Pete”The Beat”  Wuscher has just started his set, and he sounds great. After Pete wraps things up, we’re going to keep the music thing going with the rad old-timey sounds of Rattletrap and then it’s onto the Gypsy (and Moravian and Bohemian and Slovak) sounds of Domi Adamova and friends.

We also still have some truly excellent items still up for bid in our silent auction.  The yART sale has proven to be quite the draw, and there are still tons of great items left.

Oh, and we have snacks and cider. By snacks I mean pizza from Della Zona. And it’s free.

Good art = I don’t have time to name to 25+ local artists who’ve submitted visual art this year, but I can tell you that you will be better for taking it all in.

Plus, the silent auction kicks off at 6 pm, and all proceeds to go ARTS/West. Just think, you walk away with an amazing silent auction item AND help ARTS/West to continue providing quality arts programming in our community. You can’t beat that.

I was inspired to learn the art of pyrography (woodburning) about 12 yrs ago after I met some artists who were burning intricate artwork onto wood mushrooms and various types of found wood. I got hold of a beginner’s wood burning kit and began to explore this unique form of expression.

After honing my skills for a couple of years I began teaching some high school classes in pyrography through Foothills School for Appalachian Arts here in SE Ohio. It was about this time that my interest in pyrography started to really escalate to the point to where I was focusing on pyrography as my primary medium and I began designing original work.

After creating several works for local organizations and businesses, people began asking me to make custom pieces. It occurred to me that pyrography might be more than just a hobby.

Using spray paint, acrylic, and marker, my work tends to have a childlike, naïve quality to it. Yet the images are rich with symbolism and subversion. Many of the pieces are symmetrical, which contrasts nicely and gives order to the more whimsical elements. Themes that are often explored in my work are animals, tragic humor, and personal memories. For influences, I find myself drawn to folk art, works made by other cultures, cartoons, and religious iconography.

I have always loved to press flowers and to express myself through art, but it was only a few years ago that I turned my passion into a career. My educational background is in chemistry and biology, so I worked on the molecular aspect of plants. Between work and taking care of my family, I did not have much time for myself. However, after a turning point in life represented by cancer, I rediscovered myself and decided to focus on my artistic abilities.

My love for nature is reflected in my art. My pictures are painted with nature’s paints – pressed flowers, leaves, and grass – and are sometimes combined with watercolors, pastels, and other mixed media. Each piece is unique. I use modern preservation techniques to ensure that my art will be long-lasting.

But seriously, what’s a yART sale? A yART sale is a yard sale, but with panache.

We are looking for anything you would like to donate for the yART sale that is either artistic in nature or just different – things like wacky furniture pieces, Elvis Head table lamps, colorful wall hangings, etc… we do not want the average yard sale items.  There has to be something in your house that is strange that needs a new home or seconds from your studio that need clearing out – we’ll take it all!
